Atone un jour e.p
(Autres Directions)French electronic music is going through quite a good spell in recent times, with Air's triumphant return to form and M83's outstanding surprise success Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts. Continuing the trend, if on a much smaller scale, is Atone's un jour ep.
With a sound akin to Lali Puna, hints of Boards of Canada and a touch of Apparat, un jour is firmly in the 'chill-out' camp of electronica. The beats, whilst never dull, make little effort to intrude on the washes of synths, bleeps and blips that scatter across the record. It's all very much early morning instrumentals by the numbers. If that appeals however, then the record is solid.
No track stands above the rest, all meander along nicely, building gradually then slowly breaking down. Whether the lack of variation could carry the sound over a whole album is debatable, but for its 24 minutes un jour is a pleasant listen. It won't suit everyone, and doesn't set its sights particularly high, but what it does try to do, it achieves with ease.
