Night Choreography EP

Muggabears Night Choreography EP

(Self-released: themuggabears.com) Rating - 7/10

Brooklyn trio the Muggabears have been active since 2003. After releasing a debut album out of Norman, Oklahoma, they released last autumn's Teenage Cop EP from the East coast to plaudits from the likes of Time Out New York and Lost At Sea magazine. New long single, Night Choreography, is a pleasure for fans of the discordant and sardonic.

The music is both perverse and indie-typical. Travis Johnson shares Tim Kinsella's half interested delivery and serrated subject matter. Mogwai type sound buffers, Desaparacidos angst and ...Trail of Dead worthy explosions rub shoulders in seven punctual songs. Then heads turn and it's as if Sonic Youth have a more clearly defined melodic intent. There's OK Computer paranoia and Mclusky scorn to The Goth Tarts. Laughter and promotion of sterility is rarely so angry and entertaining. The beautifully named Dead Kid Kicks evokes a backward fried Mark E Smith burning wicker and dancing to Source Tags and Codes. Rings catches the listener off balance with lust in the air between alcohol and EVOL.

Due to practicality, I'll probably hear Night Choreography more regularly than the potential masterwork to follow. This is a wonderfully convenient listen as a coffee cup empties, enjoyable in its brevity and memorable for those moments of intense promise.
